World news: Iran may form a new gas market

15.07.2023

Iran is attempting to establish a gas alliance with Qatar.

Turkmenistan’s gas swap with Azerbaijan via Iran was used as a trial step. Then, in November 2022, Russia and Iran began working on the issue of swap gas supplies in the amount of about 10 billion m3/year of gas at the first stage. In February 2023 Iran has officially offered a large-scale gas swap to Russia and Turkmenistan, receiving gas in the north and delivering supplies in the south in any direction in return. In particular, it was about gas supplies to Pakistan, to the border with which Iran is building a gas pipeline with a capacity of 100 million m3/day of gas (about 36.5 billion m3/year), which in the future opens up the possibility for supplies to India.

At the same time, Tehran is turning 180 degrees towards the Persian Gulf and is exploring prospects for cooperation with Doha in the energy sector.
